Bush, Blair could learn from London police

Kudos to London’s police force, which appears to be doing a masterful job of locating and arresting terrorists involved in the recent bombings.

Today, according to the news, seven more are guests of the crown.

The dragnet has spread to Italy, where suspect Osman Hussain had fled to from London. Hussain was being questioned by Italian authorities and is expected to fight extradition. In the news account, we found this particularly interesting:

Police discovered that Hussain called Saudi Arabia hours before his arrest, the Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported, and the Sunday Times said another bombing suspect went on a monthlong visit to Saudi Arabia in 2003, telling friends he was to undergo training there.

And then, there is this:

Hussain also said the bombers had been led by a man called “Muktar,” the Rome daily La Repubblica reported.

“Muktar showed us videos with images of the war in Iraq,” Hussain said, according to Italian reports.

Suspect Muktar Said Ibrahim, 27, was arrested Friday in London. The Ethiopian-born Briton, also known as Muktar Mohammed Said, is accused of planting explosives on a bus in east London. The Sunday Times said he went to Saudi Arabia in 2003.

We can’t help but note that there’s a pattern here. It’s made all the more telling because both Said and Hussain are not Saudis but Ethiopians by birth.

Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf blew off suggestions last week that there was any connection between the July 7 bombings in London and his country, despite the fact those bombers were from Pakistan or of Pakistani heritage and had gone there for religious studies in the last year or two. Oh no, Musharraf insisted, the terrorists in his country have all been rounded up and dealt with.

Shortly, we’re sure, we’ll hear one or more Saudi diplomats earnestly assure us the Saudi government’s increasingly effective anti-terror efforts have made it virtually impossible for the most recent bombers to have received training and support from Saudi Arabia.

Cut the bull: Nations that attack and try to invade the U.S. or U.K. face severe military consequences. Nations whose people attack and try to invade the U.S. or U.K. are allowed to sing and dance their way out of consequences. This is wrong, self-defeating and a stop should be put to it.

A formal declaration of war by the U.S. and Britain need not be followed up with massive bombing or invasions. It could just be a way of serving notice: We won’t accept any more of their people as immirgrants, visitors, students or resident aliens; and we reserve the right, when necessary, to go into their countries to get terrorists, their trainers and facilitators.
