The good news for the U.S. in this relationship is that Mr. and Mrs. America and their kids can buy thousands of products at remarkably low prices — for awhile. Some businesses can enjoy unprecedented profitmaking, again, for awhile. Some investors, likewise, get to clean up for awhile.

The immigration bill itself was a monstrosity, studded with provisions requiring keen oversight, no-nonsense management and highly effective enforcement. Everyone, Democrats and Republicans alike, along with most of the U.S. public knew how likely Bush was to make good meeting those requirements.

A House Armed Services subcommittee report paints a grim picture of all those Iraqi military and police troops who were supposed to be standing up, so our troops could stand down.

Rudy Giuliani dropped in at the Rev. Pat Robertson’s Regent University to bond with the crackpot cleric and make nice with the fundamentalist Christian campus set.

Get a load of who just helped Sen. Hillary Clinton put on a fund-raising event. Pockets don’t get much deeper than those of the “Oracle of Omaha.”

We’re not sure if this sudden outburst of sanity from Sen. Lugar was inspired by deep concern for protecting our vital interests or his political hide. Either way, it’s a welcome addition to the dialogue about what to do — and what to quit doing — with respect to President Bush’s Iraq quagmire.

Saudi Arabia, a black hole for human rights, staunchly anti-democratic, the cradle of Wahabi anti-American jihadist hatred, the origin of most of the 9-11 attackers and wealthy beyond imagination, deserves not one cent of U.S. aid money for anything.

We think some editors and reporters should have to answer for wasting everyone’s time and attention. But then, maybe distraction and wasting time and attention are what the editors and reporters’ corporate cheiftans want from them.

This is an excellent analysis that rings true. It also runs completely counter to the ironic crowing right-wing bloggers are engaging in about Congress’ low numbers.

We came across an interesting post, “The Missing Link Between Immigration and Terrorism,” at Militant Moderates concerning the national security threat posed by a relatively free flow of illegal immigrants across our southern border — and concomitantly by broad amnesty for millions of illegals already in the U.S.



MM’s post poses a question we found intriguing but not that hard to answer.
