But some cartoonists have no problem with presenting complete fabrication as their supposedly clever, telling statement.

Ahmadinejad was at least spared the one that goes: “Do you beat your wife as much as you used to? Answer yes or no.” And Bollinger restrained himself from thumbing his nose and saying Ahmadinejad’s mother wears Army shoes.

Even so, the university president’s performance was an over-the-top display of COYA and fecklessness. The insults and indictments reflected badly on him, his institution and this country.

If Newsweek’s story about Vice President Dick Cheney seriously considering provoking a war between Israel and Iran, so the U.S. could then step in and attack Iran, something must be done about him.

It wasn’t what he said, but the way he said it: the facial expression, the way he looked down, the way his voice dropped, how the words seemed forced.

Quote: “f we are honest, I think we must admit that those who have benefited from the new global marketplace — and that includes almost everyone in this room — have not always concerned themselves with the losers in this new economy.”

This refusal of Ahmadinejad’s request smacks of the pettiness and spitefulness of a banana republic, as opposed to the self-confidence and openness of a great nation. It is yet another in a long string of U.S. mistakes in dealing with Iran and its officials.
