Yesterday’s failed vote on the financial-industry “bailout” was a bitter harvest of years of hyperpartisan rancor, much of that the result of Republicans’ ideological extremism, overbearing tactics, demagoguery and refusal of accountability.

Pelosi’s truth hurt
We think Pelosi didn’t give Republicans hell; she told the truth and they thought it was hell. Here’s her 16-minute speech. See what you think.
Conservative Republican idiocy a sure thing
Quote: “I read the other day that Sen. McCain likes to gamble.Quote logo He likes to roll those dice. And that’s OK. I enjoy a little friendly game of poker myself every now and then. But one thing I know is this: We can’t afford to gamble on four more years of the same disastrous economic policies we’ve had for the last eight.”
Where there’s conflict-of-interest smoke . . .
Sen. John McCain has woven a tangled web of erratic behavior, grandstanding and BS in recent days, the better to deceive. In his latest New York Times column, Frank Rich unravels the why and wherefore.
All that’s missing are baggy pants and a red nose
Until this week and even though he’s a fine man, we credited ex-Sen. George McGovern with running the worst presidential campaign we’d ever seen. Thirty-six years later, Sen. John McCain has displaced McGovern for that dubious distinction, winning his wilted laurels with spectacular buffoonery.
McCain bid to delay debate a political move
MSNBC reports the Obama campaign agreed to make a joint statement with McCain on dealing with the crisis, but “is inclined” to go ahead with the debate. McCain’s dramatic move appears designed to make him appear proactive and presidential, and to put Obama in a box.
Wall Street bailout, yes; Paulson approach, no
Hard-core conservatives and some on the left are making noises about letting Wall Street’s well-heeled dipsticks deal with the mess they made as best they can. Watching them struggle their way to insolvency and collapse might provide some schadenfreude satisfaction for the rest of us, but it would surely prove to be ruinously expensive entertainment.
Surge success exists mostly in Republican lies
From a letter to their Senate colleagues by Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham, urging support for President Bush’s troop surge strategy in Iraq by voting for the defense authorization bill:
“We invite you to join us in cosponsoring Senate Resolution 636, a bipartisan resolution that recognizes the strategic success achieved by the surge in Iraq and [...]
McCain needs special checkup, pronto
Incidents such as Sen. John McCain’s Tuesday interview with a Miami Spanish-language radio station, in which he either flip-flopped or dissembled on whether he’d meet with Spain’s prime minister, raise questions about the 72-year-old GOP candidate’s soundness of mind. No snark, political trickery or age discrimination intended; this is serious business.
The real Republican maverick speaks up
“She doesn’t have any foreign policy credentials. You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don’t know what you can say. You can’t say anything.
. . .”I think they ought to be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, ‘I look out my window and [...]
