Telling earmark hypocrisy like it is

Gosh, maybe there’s hope after all that the mainstream media will do the right — as opposed to pro-right — thing over the next few weeks.

Yes, any more that’s expecting a lot. But today we came across this, from the Associated Press:

FAIRFAX, Va. – Republican presidential nominee John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, equated lawmakers’ requests for funding for special projects with corruption on Wednesday even though Palin herself has requested nearly $200 million in so-called “earmarks” this year.”

Wow.

Are we correct to take this well-done story as an encouraging sign, or are we just suffering from pre-traumatic stress disorder as Nov. 4 approaches?

It’s true, the media actually is starting to report on stuff like this. Yahoo! News has done several stories about her two-faced approach to earmarks, and billing Alaskan taxpayers for travel expenses even when she hasn’t gone anywhere.

Now all we have to do is hope that people will actually read these stories.

  2. Experience shows, alas, that encouraging signs during political campaigns usually weren’t, so I think I’ll go for pre-traumatic stress disorder. So many pigs, so little lipstick…

  3. Tom, I really hope people will read the stories. Because overall, wire services and newspapers do try harder to be fair.

Jeff, great line about the pigs and lipstick, but I fear you’re right about hopeful signs. Been there, got burned.

The mainstream media is so intent on appearing non-partisan that they end up giving lies and truth equal time. Fair ain’t necessarily balanced.

  5. Aloneonalimb, that’s a crucial point. It’s something the media and the public should have some serious discussions about.

For a politician in her position, Palin has shown a lot of gumption and fortitude in reducing government largess for a politician in her position. That you won’t give her any credit just means you have no interest in fiscal discipline by the feds. At least we know where you stand.
