Where there’s conflict-of-interest smoke . . .

Sen. John McCain has woven a tangled web of erratic behavior, grandstanding and BS in recent days, the better to deceive. In his latest New York Times column, Frank Rich unravels the why and wherefore.

What if we all started negative campaigning?

While putting Oh!pinion back together, we came across our July 6, 2005, post, Imagine if negative approach spread beyond politics. With the ‘08 presidential campaign entering the dog days of summer, we find this post as timely and appropriate now as it was then. . .

Blog woes: better to replace or restore?

If you’ve visited Oh!pinion in the past two or three days you’ve seen that something has gone terribly wrong — because of hacking, file corruption or maybe our karma is just out of whack. We discovered this after returning from the latest of two multi-day trips out of town in the past three weeks on urgent family business. Hence, the new look . . .

AF peabrains order up posh pods

Bad enough Air Force brass insist on wasting millions on luxury airborne isolation pods for themselves, but the capper is blowing $68,000 to change leather seats from brown to blue and add little pockets. . . . OK, the Air Force is top-down oriented and rank has its privileges. Still, this country-club cocooning aloft stinks to high heaven. Especially in light of how uniformed lesser beings travel. . .

Faint praise minus the damnation

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman finds redemption for America’s tattered image and strained international relations in a U.S. effort to impose harsher sanctions on Zimbabwe’s despicable regime. Then there’s the increasingly obvious fact McCain is at best a bumbling duffer when it comes to economic policy, all too willing to pile on more of what has only made matters worse under President Bush’s misleadership.

Better a sock than Jackson’s own foot

Evidently, Jackson thought Obama’s recent criticism of AWOL and irresponsible fathers was “talking down” to black folks. Way to go, Jackson. Join Pastor Jeremiah Wright in the corner, with your back to the room.

Maybe dishonesty gene explains GOP trait

Republicans in high office — and those seeking high office — are pathologically incapable of being open, honest and above board, as yet more evidence makes clear. Scanning today’s news, we see Vice President Dick Cheney edited health officials’ testimony before Congress last fall, removing anything that revealed dangers to public health from global warming. Cheney deleted nearly half the draft testimony, according to a former EPA official . . .

Poll: Obama wins Electoral College 273-160

Results of a nationwide Zogby poll just out show Sen. Barack Obama not only winning in the popular-vote horserace, but way ahead in crucial Electoral College results. . . . Do the math and you’ll see that if the election were held now and McCain somehow managed to sweep the undecideds, Obama would still win.
