Bad enough Air Force brass insist on wasting millions on luxury airborne isolation pods for themselves, but the capper is blowing $68,000 to change leather seats from brown to blue and add little pockets. . . . OK, the Air Force is top-down oriented and rank has its privileges. Still, this country-club cocooning aloft stinks to high heaven. Especially in light of how uniformed lesser beings travel. . .

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman finds redemption for America’s tattered image and strained international relations in a U.S. effort to impose harsher sanctions on Zimbabwe’s despicable regime. This begs a question: How few fish in a barrel does Friedman suppose we must shoot so we can wear white hats and hear choruses of attaboys from the world community?

Via The Huffington Post we learn, “The illustration, by Barry Blitt, is called ‘The Politics of Fear’ and, according to the NYer press release, ’satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama’s campaign.’” Here’s the problem: many Americans know little more about the New Yorker than that it’s a magazine, and a whole lot more often don’t “get” raw satire. . .

McCain sees himself as a president heavily involved in hobnobbing with foreign leaders and dealing in defense-related matters such as getting us into a war with Iran and buying new missile systems. Then there’s the increasingly obvious fact McCain is at best a bumbling duffer when it comes to economic policy, all too willing to pile on more of what has only made matters worse under President Bush’s misleadership.

Republicans in high office — and those seeking high office — are pathologically incapable of being open, honest and above board, as yet more evidence makes clear. Scanning today’s news, we see Vice President Dick Cheney edited health officials’ testimony before Congress last fall, removing anything that revealed dangers to public health from global warming. Cheney deleted nearly half the draft testimony, according to a former EPA official . . .

Upwards of a half million Americans lost their jobs in the first half of this year, 62,000 in June alone, with President Bush’s tax rebates doing little to stop or reverse darkening employment prospects. . .

What struck us about Obama’s piece is that here’s someone who believes in and practices democracy. He’s an intelligent, well-informed and thoughtful adult talking to other adults he regards as being just as intelligent, well-informed and thoughtful as he is — even thought they’re at odds with him. What a contrast that is with the “my way or the highway,” “disagree with me and you’re an unpatriotic terrorist sympathizer, dupe or political enemy” garbage President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and other administration officials have made the norm for political discourse for seven and a half long years.
